The first in a projected series of recordings started early 2015, this is something I have wanted to do for a long time and something very different for me, improvised music, not exactly atonal but played freely without all the usual reference points.
Performed on solo double bass and recorded in one take with no overdubs.
I have tried to get a very different sound from my double bass, using very low tension nylon strings that make a sound almost diametrically opposed to the conventional jazz bass sound (or one of the conventional jazz bass sounds ) with very little pizzicato sustain, lots of thud, finger noise and a dramatic, eccentric arco sound. There is a lot of associated noise.
I see this as the musical equivalent of the abstract visual art I have been making for years.
For my first new recording in this vein, I wanted an improvised piece that I could revisit and also perform live, so here is “the alphabet”, twenty six improvised miniatures.
